About Our Church

Where Our Story Begins . . .

The history of the New Light Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church can not exist without going back to its origins, the Webberville Ebenezer Baptist Church. Because of the migration of people from the rural to the city, the majority of the members at Webberville Ebenezer Baptist Church decided to move the church to the city. In 1964, under the leadership of Reverend R.S. Tinnon, three lots were purchased on Reyes Street (4609, 4701 and 4703). These lots were paid for in 1967. Sister Juanita Smith, a current member of New Light told the Church members about the availability of a building. The building was donated to the members of Ebenezer at no cost. The Church had to pay for the moving and restoration.

On the third Sunday in August, 1967, the doors of New Light Ebenezer Baptist Church were opened. The name "New Light Ebenezer" was suggested by the late Sister M. E. Brown.

Reverend R.S. Tinnon pastored New Light Ebenezer for 9 years (1963-1972).

In 1973-1979, Reverend J. A. Piper was called and served as pastor.

In 1980, Reverend Frank Cage, Sr. was called as pastor. As pastor, Reverend Cage led the members in remodeling the old structure and the land across the street, 4702 Reyes Street, was purchased. Remodeling the old structure did not solve the many problems in the building. Plans were made to began building a new structure. The first plans were made to build on the sight at 4702 Reyes.

The land was unsuitable. In June 1990, the old structure was torn down to make way for the new.

On the first Sunday in March, 1991, the doors of New Light Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church #2were opened at 4703 Reyes Street.

A few years later, renovations were made, the fellowship hall was enlarged and a basketball court was built on the lot across the street. In February 2003, the New Light Church Family celebrated their Annual Family Day and Mortgage Note Burning Ceremony. God continued to bless the New Light Church Family under the leadership of Pastor Frank Cage. The members of New Light are grateful for his leadership and the legacy of faithfulness he bestowed on us. Pastor Cage served as pastor of New Light for 41 years. On August 4, 2021, the Lord called him to his “New Home” in glory.
